Wondering whether to go for a luxury hotel for your next trip or stick to something a little less fancy?  There is no doubt you get a lot more perks when you stay at high end accommodation, and those who travelled to the US during the holiday season would have found just that.  As if the festive decorations and jovial ambience were not enough, guests who stayed in upmarket places even found the lovely smell of fresh gingerbread wafting through the air as they entered their hotel accommodation.

Of course, travelling overseas for Christmas is always a bit of a gamble – some cities come alive with Christmas festivities in December, while the Christmas spirit is hardly noticeable in other places.  But high end hotels specialise in having all the little details that make their guests feel at home, so you are much more likely to have a great time if you stay in these types of accommodation, no matter where you are planning to travel in the world.

Here are five incredible gingerbread houses that were on display during Christmas:

Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta

If you strolled into the lobby of this four star hotel in December, you would have found a life-sized pagoda sitting sweet and pretty to welcome its guests.  Many hands went into the making of this masterpiece – macarons, pies, cakes and cupcakes were just a few of the added extras that went into decorating the gingerbread structure.

The Jefferson Hotel, Richmond

This five star hotel’s pastry chef Sara Ayyash created a Santa’s Workshop display which featured gingerbread, candy and lots of icing.  It is elaborate, fun and really well lit up.  Already known for its grand details like the rotunda and Palm Court lobby, The Jefferson took it up a notch around Christmas time to impress all its guests and visitors.

The Lodge at Turning Stone Resort Casino, New York

This 60-foot-long village took 1,200 hours to create, and featured 7,000 gingerbread pieces, 1,500 pounds of gingerbread dough, 1,000 pounds of candy and 700 pounds of icing.  The village consisted of two-storey houses with snow-dusted roofs, a snow man and even a bakery with tiny treats.  Being the largest display in Central New York, this scene was certainly impressive.

The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs

The Broadmoor at Colorado Springs definitely didn’t hold back this Christmas.  A display of a gingerbread village featuring a life-size dwelling stood tall to wow guests.  This five star accommodation also offered a special Christmas house, which stocked decorated trees and small gifts.  Of course, kids could also take photos with Santa.

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel

Since this four star resort overlooks the Pacific, it created an imaginative gingerbread display that included turtles, sea otters, sharks,a whale and a 6 foot sea that was made completely of icing.  Apart from the smell of fresh gingerbread baking, the hotel also offered nautical themed lights, a surfboard auction and holiday buffets to keep guests entertained.

Planning your next holiday to London?

If you are planning to head to London this year, then make sure you take a look at the various luxury suites in London that are available.  Luxury hotels in London are plentiful, and you can find some great bargains if you look online or book directly with the hotel.

Although you might not find gingerbread displays dominating hotel lobbies, especially if you are travelling outside the festive season, there are many reasons why you should still go with a luxury hotel in London.  A five star hotel aims to anticipate all your needs in advance, and will typically offer the following:

•Luxury suites with separate rooms.
•At least one onsite restaurant that allows you to grab all your meals seven days a week.
•Services such as 24-hour reception, 24-hour room service, valet parking and concierge.
•Additional onsite facilities such as a gym, a wellness centre, a business centre, a spa and conference rooms.

Four-star hotels may offer one or more of the above services, but they are more about giving you the service you need when you need it, rather than anticipating all your needs beforehand.  So, if you want a real treat, then a five star hotel is definitely the way to go.
