With so many culinary treats in the UK capital, you wouldn’t think it too difficult to find a great tasting pancake. The fact is that an all-American great quality breakfast in the city are far and few between, London usually favouring the full English which you guessed it, will leave you fuller than Brighton beach during a heatwave. Pancakes must also not be mistaken for crepes, the European equivalent which is popular in France and Holland. What we’re searching for is the fluffy, not crispy variety which is often lathered in maple syrup or bacon. So where in London can you find a great American Breakfast?
The Diner is a chain American restaurant with an especially stylish branch based in Shoreditch. The menu includes not only American breakfasts but Mexican styled Huevos Ranchos among many others. The Lumberjack breakfast is of special note because of its tasty and unique buttermilk pancakes. The buttermilk which goes into these pancakes is so sweet and wholesome that you’ll plough through the generous stack this restaurant gives you. What’s more, the Diner is just a short walk from the Shoreditch based Boutique Hotel London M by Montcalm.
Ed’s Easy Diner
Easy not only by name, Ed’s Easy Diner is located just a short walk from Angel station. Here you can find a mega sized breakfast menu of chicken and waffles, breakfast burgers and, you guessed it, pancakes. The massive All American Pancake Stacks include streaky bacon, maple syrup and blueberries all topped off with dusty icing sugar. If that doesn’t float your boat (or sink it depending on your weight after consumption), then you can go for the Stack Attack which trumps that already flavoursome combo with sausage patty, hash browns, griddled eggs and maple syrup.
The Grill Shack
With it’s converted factor style interior, Soho’s Grill Shack is a great place to grab a hefty breakfast and preposterously tasty pancakes. For those of you looking for more than just pancakes to give you fuel for the day, then try the Big Shack Breakfast which not only dishes out great pancakes but also maple syrup, bacon, sausages, fried eggs, baked beans, grilled tomato, hash browns and toast. This is about as all-inclusive as you can get, whilst the veggie breakfast also includes pancakes alongside mushrooms, eggs and grilled tomatoes.
For a more docklands and industrial landscape whilst chowing down, try Fatboy’s Diner. Here you can find an amazing menu of scrambled egg, pancakes and topped with maple syrup. If you’re looking for a drink to wet your whistle, the bottomless coffee’s will certainly kickstart your day whilst the Oreo cookie milk shakes will, although extremely tasty, slow it down.
Jackson & Rye
This Martin Brudnizki designed restaurant is based in Soho and pays homage to early 20th century upmarket brasseries in the US. Not only do they serve brunch menus of buttermilk pancakes, but also have a gourmet restaurant menu and a plethora of traditional whiskies to try.
